ELECTRICITY GENERATOR DEMONSTRATION MODEL

This is a device which converts mechanical energy to electrical energy.

HISTORY:-

Oersted discovered the existence of the magnetic field due to the current flowing in a conductor. Ampere derived the expression for the intensity of the magnetic field. It occurred to Faraday, that it is possible to produce a converse effect i.e. it is possible to produce a current from the magnetic field. In 1831, Faraday discovered that whenever magnetic lines of force are cut by a closed circuit, an induced current flows in the circuit and last only as long as the change last. The induced e.m.f giving rise to such currents is called the induced electromotive force and the phenomenon is called electromagnetic induction.

PRINCIPLE OF WORKING:-

This is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, i.e., when a coil rotates about an axis perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field, and e.m.f. is induced in it.

 PROCEDURE AND WORKING:

The fig. show the necessary components of A.C. Generator

1. First of all, the position of Permanent magnets attached to the disc must be as shown in fig.

 

2. Then the electromagnetic system is moved with the help of handle provided with the A.C. Generator so that mechanical energy can be converted into electrical energy.

3. As the electron magnetic system moves, the magnetic flux which is perpendicular to coil, changes and electromagnetic e.m.f. is induced e.m.f. ie produced across the terminals provided on the base of Generator which can be measured with the help of moving coil meter of digital multimeter.

4. A voltage proportional to the rate of change of the area facing the magnetic field is generated in the coil which is and example of Faraday’s law.

ADVANTAGES OF A.C:

1. Alternating current can be transmitted over long distance using step up transformers. The loss of energy is negligible. Direct current cannot be transmitted as such.

2. The A.C. voltages can be easily varied using transformers.

3. The A.C. can be easily converted into D.C.

4. The magnitude of A.C. can be reduced using a choke coil, without involving loss of energy.

5. The A.C. is easier and cheaper to generate than D.C. The A.C. generators are usually more robust and their efficiency is high.
